About Kamnik

Kamnik is a lovely Alpine town surrounded by green hills and high peaks of Kamnik Alps (2500 m above see level). It is only 23 kilometres away from Ljubljana, the capital of Slovenia, and no more than 15 kilometres away from the Brnik Airport. Due to its central position one can quickly reach all other sights and attractions of Slovenia.
Kamnik is an ancient town of a thousand faces, with a rich history and numerous cultural pearls, with beautiful surroundings of natural beauty and a varied tourist offer. Because it is almost impossible to find a place in Slovenia that offers that many different types of sports activities, sports tourism is of great importance for Kamnik. During summer and winter, for individuals and groups, for adults, kids or for people with special demands – at any given time and for everybody there is a sports programme that will make your staying in Kamnik an unforgettable experience.

Climate
The municipality of Kamnik is situated in an area of moderate continental climate of Central Slovenia. The average temperature in the Kamnik region is 11ºC (average temperature in January is -1ºC, average temperature in July is 21ºC, with an average rainfall of 1400 mm. The weather in this area is influenced by the Kamniške Alps. These ensure that the summers are not too hot while the winters can be very cold and rich with snow.

History
The history of Kamnik reaches back to prehistory. The most prosperous era for the town was the Middle Ages, which were followed by periods of rises and falls. Kamnik developed greatly during the 19th and the 20th Centuries, at which time various industries were established.  During the Middle Ages, the town of Kamnik was a flourishing craft centre with a mint and the home of numerous well-known families. Today
The most beautiful part of the town is, no doubt, its old town core with typical narrow streets, decorated by medieval and baroque facades of houses. Up on the hill, right in the centre of the town, there is Mali grad with its three - store Romanic chapel. Even higher above the town Stari grad, now in ruins, still watches over Kamnik. Among sights, worth seeing, there are two museums, the castle Zaprice and the private Sadnikar museum, and Franciscan monastery with a rich collection of old books and incunabula. Culinary
Older housewives will be pleased to explain to you that žganci (hard-boiled wheat mush) are the pillar of Carniola and that they still like to prepare them today! In the past, high calorie foods with large amounts of animal fat prevailed because after a days work on the farm, people needed to replenish their energies. These most often included cracklings, minced lard, bacon and floury foods made from pork. Soups, such as the one made by browning flour on lard and adding water, or potato and bean soups, or beef broth, which was served only on Sundays and holidays, have been popular in this region for a long time.
