The Municipality of Kamnik lies at the meeting point of the alpine and subalpine worlds, which makes it a starting point of mountaineering trails leading into the heart of the Kamniške-Savinjske Alps, as well as to the valley of the Kamniška Bistrica River and the Tuhinjska Valley, and three mountain plateaus: Velika planina, Mala planina, and Gojška planina. Kamnik is the starting point of twelve bicycle trails that differ widely in length, altitude difference, riding times, skill levels, views, riding surfaces, etc. We recommend the tours of Velika planina or Menina planina for bicycling virtuosos, and for recreational riders, the Kamnik-Volčji Potok Arboretum bicycle trail that runs on asphalt and ends with an enjoyable stroll on the footpaths by the lake and flowerbeds of the Volčji Potok Arboretum. The trail on Mount Srobotno, where the ascent is awarded by the wonderful view of Motnik and the Church of Sv. Jurij is tailor-made for lovers of dirt roads. For those who prefer short and steep  trails the ideal trail that runs on asphalt and it starts in the the centre of Kamnik is the one that leads up to Stari grad. Local clubs in Kamnik organise a lot of different kinds of races but one of them has a special place in international calendar –  marathon from Terme Snovik to Velika planina, a 28 kilometres long trail for mountain bikers.
