The most beautiful part of the town is, no doubt, its old town core with typical narrow streets, decorated by medieval and baroque facades of houses. Up on the hill, right in the centre of the town, there is Mali grad with its three - store Romanic chapel. Even higher above the town Stari grad, now in ruins, still watches over Kamnik. Among sights, worth seeing, there are two museums, the castle Zaprice and the private Sadnikar museum, and Franciscan monastery with a rich collection of old books and incunabula. Through history Kamnik has been quite successful in keeping its old idyllic look.
Kamnik is also well known for tourist events, such as Dnevi narodnih noš (The National Costumes Festival). Every year in the beginning of September the festival transforms Kamnik into joyful town. Exquisite architecture of old houses is not the only reminder of the glorious past; legends say that the bewitched countess Veronika, half woman half snake, is believed to be the guardian of the treasures of Mali grad. The legend was brought back into life in the comic opera Veronika that was performed during the festival, called "Medieval Days in Kamnik". The festival was a success because its medieval market and other events introduced Kamnik of the past, as well as of the present, with its flourishing trading and brisk life. A continually increased importance for the development of Kamnik is placed on tourism. You can not find a place on earth that has more possibilities for active holidays in the immediate vicinity (within 10 kilometres). The town is literally packed with action, positive energy and adrenalin, the diversity of activities is breathtaking – everybody can find himself lots of places of interest, during summer and winter. There are some places, though, worth special mentioning – Krvavec and Velika planina, the medium sized ski centres offering a pleasant skiing and numerous activities for children and families, the latter also offering a unique experience of dwelling in the-rest-of-Europe-can’t-be-found mountain cottages; Arboretum Volcji potok, the most visited horticultural amenity in Slovenia; Terme Snovik, recognized as the highest situated thermal spa resort in Slovenia, as well as the only thermal resort in the region Gorenjsko (the most mountainous area in Slovenia); Tunjice natural health resort, spa with healing water and several energy springs, marked with circles and ideograms of different shapes. Kamnik pays special attention to children (many international workshops with different topics are organised each year only for children not to mention sport activities such as tennis, archery, shooting, biking, fishing, hiking, tracking, mountainiring, swimming, waterpolo, beach volley, skating, in-line hockey, etc.) and people with disabilities (there is a primary and secondary school for handicapped in Kamnik offering a wide range of activities led by Mrs Dianne Jones such as swimming according to Halliwick concept, hippotherapy, electrotherapy, respiratory therapy, etc.).
